UPS

Introduction to UPS Applications

An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) provides temporary and stable backup power to prevent data loss, equipment damage, or business interruption caused by sudden power outages.   UPS systems are widely used in data centers, hospitals, telecom networks, and industrial facilities.

Introduction to UPS Applications

Working Principle

When the grid is operating normally, a UPS supplies power to the load while charging its built-in battery.   In the event of a power failure, the UPS immediately switches to battery power (typically within a few milliseconds), ensuring seamless operation of connected devices.   This allows users to perform safe shutdown procedures or connect to backup generators without interruption.

Main Types of UPS

  • Standby UPS: Cost-effective, simple structure, suitable for home computers and small office equipment.

  • Online UPS: Provides the highest stability and zero transfer time, suitable for servers, medical devices, and industrial control.

  • Line-Interactive UPS: Adds voltage regulation, suitable for small and medium-sized network equipment.

Key Parameters

  • Capacity (VA/W): Determines load support and runtime; must be matched to equipment power demand.

  • Battery Life: Depends on battery capacity. Basic models support only a few minutes, while extended runtime UPS can connect to external batteries.

Core Components in UPS Systems

  • Rectifiers & AC/DC Converters: Convert AC input into stable DC to charge batteries and power the inverter stage.

  • Inverter Modules: Convert DC battery power back to AC output during outages.

  • MOSFETs & IGBTs: Enable high-efficiency switching in inverter and rectifier circuits.

  • Power Modules: Support high-current handling, ensuring reliability in industrial-grade UPS systems.

Common Application Scenarios

  • Home & Office: Protects personal computers, routers, and small devices.

  • Data Centers: Ensures continuous operation of servers and storage systems.

  • Medical Equipment: Maintains reliable power for life-support and diagnostic systems.

  • Industrial & Telecom: Supports base stations, automation systems, and critical production equipment.
