Electric Bicycle

Overview

Electric bicycles (E-bikes) combine batteries, motors, and controllers to deliver clean and efficient mobility.    Power semiconductors play a critical role in traction, charging, and auxiliary power management, ensuring high    efficiency, long range, and system reliability.

System Architecture

  • Battery Pack: Provides 36V/48V/72V supply, managed by a BMS for protection and balancing.

  • Traction Inverter: Converts DC to three-phase AC for BLDC or PMSM motors, enabling smooth drive control and regenerative braking.

  • On-Board Charger: AC-DC with PFC and LLC topologies, optimized for high efficiency and safe charging.

  • Auxiliary DC/DC: Supplies low-voltage rails (12V/5V) for lighting, displays, and control systems.

Recommended Power Devices

  • SiC MOSFETs: Enable higher switching frequency and lower conduction losses, improving energy efficiency and thermal performance.

  • IGBT Modules: Suitable for mid-to-high power traction systems, providing robust operation and cost efficiency.

  • Low-RDS(on) MOSFETs: Ideal for battery protection, synchronous rectification, and auxiliary DC/DC conversion.

  • Integrated Power Modules: Combine power switches, drivers, and thermal design into compact packages for high power density and easy assembly.

  • System Voltage: 48V to 72V battery platforms

  • Drive Stage: Three-phase inverter with FOC or six-step control, regenerative braking supported

  • Charging: PFC + LLC with synchronous rectification, peak efficiency up to ~94%

  • Discharge Efficiency: System-level efficiency ~93% with optimized device selection

  • Cooling: Natural or forced-air cooling, compact design for urban and off-road e-bikes

Design Considerations

  • Choose device ratings with sufficient voltage/current margins (650V/1200V classes for SiC MOSFETs and IGBTs).

  • Implement robust gate drive design with short-circuit and overcurrent protection.

  • Optimize thermal management using heat sinks and high-performance substrates.

  • Ensure EMI/EMC compliance through proper layout, filtering, and shielding.
